Food: Eating Your Environment UW lecture series - Seattle

Wow, some of the best food researchers and authors coming to UW in Seattle this fall--among my favorites, Marion Nestle and Gary Nabhan.

Food: Eating Your Environment is the UW's premier lecture series of the year. It will touch on all things food related—from field to kitchen and spanning the globe from Seattle to the deserts of Sub-Saharan Africa. Bringing public intellectuals as well as practitioners to campus, we will collectively explore the most personal yet public resource relevant in our world: food.

What's on our Plate and why does it Matter? PLU - Oct. 15 &16

http://events.plu.edu/show-event.php?event_id=1041665

October 15 & 16 at PLU

Featured Speakers:
•       Jim McDonald, Bread for the World
•       Dr. Kevin Obrien, author, "The Ethics of Biodiversity"
•       Casson Trenor, author, "Sustainable Sushi: Saving the Oceans one
bite at a time"
Stop a minute and think about what you had for breakfast this
morning.  Where did the eggs or oatmeal come from?  Are they locally
grown?  Did the corn in your cornflakes come from genetically altered
corn?  Did the piece of fresh fruit you ate come on a long boat ride
from Chile?

Does it matter?  Yes!

Because how crops are grown and where they are grown has an impact on
the daily lives of thousands of people worldwide.  It changes what
farmers in Mexico and Chile plant and     export; it impacts how water
is used; and it   impacts the poorest of the poor, making it harder
for them to get food at all. But you can learn how to make a
difference . . .

How does what we eat locally effect food  supplies globally? Join us
October 15th & 16th for a two day event at Pacific  Lutheran
University.

Learn about water, food and sustainability issues, and how your
choices can create change:

• keynote by Jim McDonald from Bread for the World.

• David Creech of the ELCA Hunger Appeal.

Puyallup Fair opens Friday, Sept 10 @ 10 a.m.

Tomorrow I'm going to take a moment to try to catch the cattle drive and parade that marks the opening of the 2010 Puyallup Fair (http://www.thefair.com/rodeo/parade.php).  Yes folks, a real cattle drive down Meridian. That's what's happened in the past.  Was it last year or the year before, when the cows or a cow tried to run into Safeway, or something like that?  Anyway, if you aren't up for the excitement of watching cattle be herded down a highway, the Fair opens this Friday (with free admission from 10 a.m. until noon).

It's great to go to the Fair to enjoy the scones, Krusty Pups, Vitamix demonstrations, and rides; however, don't miss all the great agricultural exhibits and shows.  The Fair has been part of the long tradition and local history of farming here in our region and Puyallup Valley.  This is the 110th year of the Fair!  Read through the history, http://www.thefair.com/utility/about-us/history.php, to find out some amazing facts about how the Fair began, how it was developed, how the grounds were changed and used over the years, and what's been popular over the past 11 decades.  Check out the fruit and vegetable competitions, the giant pumpkins, the beef cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, poultry, rabbits and more.  Competitors come for all around the state (some even come from around the nation) to enter their very best livestock or products.

Visit the Fair online for a daily schedule of events: http://www.thefair.com/puyallup-fair/fair-planner.php

See you at the cattle drive!
