U-Cut Christmas Tree Farms in Pierce County

It's time to start decking the halls and what better way to do so than to go visit a local U-Cut Christmas tree farm?

In partial fulfillment of my research about U-Cuts in Pierce County, I went out to do a little tree hunting for my own household.  Visions of A Charlie Brown Christmas flash through my head.  Last year I had the idea to take my teenage brother on a tree hunt around our farm property in Kitsap.  What turned into a long hike concluded with a very "Charlie Brown-esque" tree and one hilarious video of the event.  This year I thought I'd go to the professionals for help.
There are some fantastic family operated U-Cut tree farms in Pierce County with good varieties of Douglas, Noble, Grand Firs, Spruces, Pines, and more....  I found a lovely and manageable Grand Fir (as I am only just barely over 5' myself) at a friend's tree farm in Puyallup and there are some great farms awaiting you and yours this holiday season.

Farms should have the necessary items to cut the tree and often can help safely attach it to your vehicle.  What should you bring?  Warm clothes, sturdy shoes, gloves if you like, and cash or check (although a couple do take debit/credit these days).  Kids are very welcome.  Pets should probably stay at home or in the car.  Many farms also have wreaths, swags, and warm cider to offer and you're likely to get that feeling of being part of the family while you are there too.  Or if don't want to cut it yourself, farms usually have pre-cut trees from their fields or will go along to help...all you have to do is point ;).

We found trees to go for around $30-40 for the average conifer, but there are some great $20 deals out there as well.  There are tree farms located all throughout Pierce County; however, the U-Cut tree shopping mecca would have to be a couple mile stretch of Hwy 162 between Sumner and Orting.  It's intense and you'll find some really full-blown operations.  For instance, Riverlook Farms has frees up to 20 feet and flocking abilities.
Here is a list of U-Cut Christmas tree farms we've found here at Pride of Pierce County Holiday Headquarters (keepin' it local for the holidays).  We also learned that there are some very small farms offering U-Cut trees--some that would rather not publicize because they have a good set of return customers each year and limited amounts of trees--so keep your eyes peeled for signs leading to small farms that could be around your neighborhood.

(Great resource for finding farms and more info on tree farms, the Puget Sound Christmas Tree Association: http://www.pscta.org)

A happy side effect of heading out to the U-Cut?  When you buy your Christmas tree from a local farm you support an important part of Pierce County agriculture.  Christmas trees are one of Pierce County’s top agricultural crops, along with rhubarb, fresh vegetables, and nursery stock.  According to the USDA 2007 Agricultural Census, over 60,600 trees were harvested here in 2007 from 37 farms, placing Pierce County at roughly third in the State for Cut-Christmas Tree production.  Additionally, Washington State is sixth in the nation for tree production.  Oregon is number one (a lot of trees you’ll find at tree lots come up from Oregon).

Happy Hunting!
